This cheat sheet comes from a real team conversation. It collects the idioms, the technical vocabulary and the key phrases that help you speak with ease in tech meetings and standups. Names and internal project names are removed.

Cette fiche est tirée d’une vraie conversation d’équipe. Elle rassemble les expressions idiomatiques, le vocabulaire technique et les phrases clés pour intervenir avec aisance en réunion tech ou en standup.

1. Technical and agile vocabulary (Vocabulaire technique et agilité)

Expression Meaning (Signification) Example
Pull request (PR) Demande de fusion de code “I’ve just put up a PR for that issue.”
Merge / cherry-pick Fusionner / sélectionner un commit précis “We should cherry-pick this fix into the release branch.”
Feature flag Activer ou désactiver une fonctionnalité à distance “We’ll turn the feature flag on this afternoon.”
Sandbox / pre-prod Environnements de test / de pré-production “They expect things to be in the sandbox.”
Dry run / dress rehearsal Test à blanc / répétition générale à l’échelle réelle “We have a dress rehearsal next week for the migration.”
Triage / investigation Analyse initiale d’un bug / recherche de la cause “I did a quick investigation on the bug dashboard.”
Blocker Obstacle, élément bloquant “I don’t think I’ll have any blockers for this task.”

2. Idioms and casual expressions (Expressions idiomatiques et décontractées)

Expression Meaning (Signification) Context
“Push back (on something)” Exprimer un désaccord constructif, mettre des réserves “Sorry to push back on that placeholder issue.”
“The floor is yours” À toi la parole To give someone the word in a standup.
“Eager to get this over with” Avoir hâte d’en finir avec quelque chose de long ou d’agaçant About a complex ticket.
“Back to back” S’enchaîner sans pause (souvent des réunions) “I have back-to-back meetings today.”
“Gearing up towards” Se préparer pour, anticiper “That’s what we’re gearing up towards.”
“A bit salesy” Un peu trop commercial, du blabla marketing To describe a very “marketing” or pompous speech.
“Pat yourself on the back” Félicitez-vous To celebrate the work done by the team.

Note : dans la conversation d’origine, on entendait aussi « wanky », un mot familier britannique et un peu vulgaire, pour dire « prétentieux ». À éviter au travail : « salesy » ou « pompous » suffisent.

3. Phrasal verbs used a lot (Verbes à particule très utilisés)

  • Pick up (a ticket / a bug) : prendre en charge un ticket.
    • “I picked up a bug ticket yesterday that a teammate pointed out.”
  • Look into (something) : analyser, examiner un problème.
    • “I need to look into this release branch issue.”
  • Run out of (things / time) : arriver au bout de, ne plus avoir de.
    • “If you run out of things to do, check the backlog.”

4. Key phrases for meetings (Phrases clés pour intervenir)

Giving your update in a standup (Donner votre update)

  • “On my side yesterday, I worked on…” (De mon côté hier, j’ai travaillé sur…)
  • “I’ve opened a PR related to…” (J’ai ouvert une PR concernant…)
  • “I’m currently investigating an issue with…” (J’enquête actuellement sur un problème avec…)
  • “I should be done by the end of the day.” (Je devrais avoir fini d’ici la fin de la journée.)
  • “No major blockers on my end.” (Pas de blocage majeur de mon côté.)

Asking questions or for details (Poser des questions)

  • “Can we catch up after the standup to talk through this?” (On peut en discuter après le standup ?)
  • “Just to make sure, has this been deployed to pre-prod yet?” (Juste pour être sûr, est-ce déjà déployé en pré-prod ?)
  • “Is there any ticket related to this on the board?” (Y a-t-il un ticket lié à ça sur le tableau ?)

Reacting and replying naturally (Réagir naturellement)

  • “Makes sense.” / “Sounds good!” (Ça se tient. / Ça me paraît bien !)
  • “Appreciate the feedback / the pushback.” (J’apprécie le retour / la remarque.)
  • “I’ll take a look at it today.” (Je vais y jeter un œil aujourd’hui.)

À retenir

  • Garde « Makes sense » et « Sounds good » en tête : ils servent dans presque toutes les réunions.
  • « Push back » est poli : c’est une façon constructive de dire non.
