Lesson 4: Asking and clarifying
Questions, repeating, checking and buying time
At work, you will not understand everything the first time. That is normal, even for native speakers. The trick is to ask in a polite and clear way.
Asking someone to repeat (Faire répéter)
| English | Français |
|---|---|
| “Sorry, could you repeat that?” | Désolé, pouvez-vous répéter ? |
| “Sorry, I didn’t catch the last part.” | Je n’ai pas saisi la fin. |
| “Could you speak a bit slower, please?” | Pouvez-vous parler un peu plus lentement ? |
| “Could you say that again?” | Pouvez-vous le redire ? |
| “What do you mean by ‘scope’?” | Que voulez-vous dire par « scope » ? |
Asking for an explanation (Demander une explication)
- “Could you clarify what you mean by…?” (Pouvez-vous préciser ce que vous entendez par… ?)
- “Could you walk me through the process?”
- “Can you give me an example?” (Pouvez-vous me donner un exemple ?)
- “Is there any documentation on this?” (Existe-t-il de la documentation ?)
- “Is there a ticket related to this on the board?” (Y a-t-il un ticket lié à ça sur le tableau ?)
Checking you understood (Vérifier sa compréhension)
- “Just to make sure I understand, you want me to…?” ?)
- “So, if I get this right, we need to finish by Friday.” (Si je comprends bien, on doit finir vendredi.)
- “Let me recap.” (Je récapitule.)
- “Does that make sense?” (C’est clair ? / Ça te paraît logique ?)
- “Are we on the same page?” (On est d’accord ? On se comprend ?)
Buying time (Gagner du temps)
You do not have to answer immediately.
- “Good question. Let me think about it.” (Bonne question. Laissez-moi y réfléchir.)
- “I’m not sure. I’ll look into it and get back to you.” (Je ne suis pas sûr. Je regarde et je reviens vers toi.)
- “I’ll check and let you know by tomorrow.”
- “I don’t have the answer right now.” (Je n’ai pas la réponse maintenant.)
Asking for help (Demander de l’aide)
- “Do you have a minute?” (Tu as une minute ?)
- “Could you take a look at my PR?” (Pourrais-tu relire ma PR ?)
- “Would you mind helping me with this?” (Ça te dérangerait de m’aider ?)
- “I’m stuck. Could we pair on this?” (Je suis bloqué. On peut le faire à deux ?)
Grammar: polite forms and indirect questions
Could / Would / Would you mind are more polite than “can”. « Could » et « would » sont plus polis que « can ».
- “Could you send me the file?” (Pourriez-vous m’envoyer le fichier ?)
- “Would you mind sending me the file?” (Cela vous dérangerait-il de m’envoyer le fichier ?) — after “mind”, use the -ing form.
Indirect questions use normal word order, without “do” or “does”.
- Direct: “Where is the document?”
- Indirect: “Could you tell me where the document is?” (not “where is the document”)
À retenir
- Demander de répéter est normal et poli : « Sorry, could you repeat that? »
- « Just to make sure…
- « I’ll look into it and get back to you » : gagner du temps sans perdre la face.
Next time, we practise giving opinions, agreeing and disagreeing politely.
