Lesson 6: Problems, bugs and incidents
Reporting, investigating, fixing and apologising
Things break. When they do, clear English helps the team act fast. You need to say what happens, what is the impact and what you do about it.
| English | Français |
|---|---|
| “I found a bug in the payment page.” |
| “It crashes when I click Save.” | Ça plante quand je clique sur Enregistrer. |
| “I expected X, but I got Y.” | Je m’attendais à X, mais j’ai obtenu Y. |
| “Here are the steps to reproduce it.” | Voici les étapes pour le reproduire. |
| “I can’t reproduce it.” | Je n’arrive pas à le reproduire. |
| “It only happens in production.” | Ça n’arrive qu’en production. |
| “It works on my machine.” | Ça marche sur ma machine. |
Impact and urgency (Impact et urgence)
- “It affects about 5% of users.” (Ça touche environ 5 % des utilisateurs.)
- “It’s a blocker.” (C’est bloquant.)
- “It’s not urgent, but we should fix it soon.”
- “Is anyone else seeing this?” (Quelqu’un d’autre voit ça ?)
- “When did it start?” / “What changed recently?” (Depuis quand ? Qu’est-ce qui a changé récemment ?)
Status updates during an incident (Pendant un incident)
Say what you know, in this order.
- “We’re investigating an issue with the login service.” (On enquête sur un problème.)
- “We’ve identified the cause.” (On a identifié la cause.)
- “A fix is being deployed.” (Un correctif est en cours de déploiement.)
- “The issue has been resolved.” (Le problème est résolu.)
- “We’ll run a post-mortem next week.” (On fera un post-mortem la semaine prochaine.)
Notice the passive voice (voix passive): “A fix is being deployed”, “The issue has been resolved”. It is common in incident updates because the action matters more than the person.
Tech words for problems
| Word | Français |
|---|---|
| root cause | cause racine |
| workaround | solution de contournement |
| hotfix | correctif urgent |
| rollback / to roll back | retour arrière / revenir en arrière |
| to revert | annuler un changement |
| outage / downtime | panne / indisponibilité |
| regression | régression |
| to escalate | faire remonter à un niveau supérieur |
- “As a workaround, you can refresh the page.” (En attendant, on peut recharger la page.)
- “We rolled back the release.” (On a annulé la mise en production.)
- “I’d like to escalate this to the infrastructure team.” (Je voudrais remonter ça à l’équipe infrastructure.)
Taking responsibility (Assumer)
- “That’s on me.” (C’est ma faute / ma responsabilité.)
- “Sorry about that. I missed it.” (Désolé, je l’ai raté.)
- “My bad.” (Mon erreur. Très informel.)
- “I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
- “Thanks for flagging it.” (Merci de l’avoir signalé.)
Warning people (Prévenir)
- “Quick heads-up: the deploy will cause a short downtime.”
- “Just a heads-up, the API will be slow this afternoon.” (Juste pour vous prévenir…)
- “Thanks for the heads-up.”
- Reconnaître une erreur simplement (« That’s on me ») est apprécié.
Next time, we look at meetings, calls and presentations.
