Meetings follow a pattern: open, discuss, decide, close. Each step has its own phrases. Learn them once and you can use them in every meeting.

Opening a meeting (Ouvrir)

  • “Shall we get started?” (On commence ?)
  • “Thanks for joining.” (Merci d’être là.)
  • “The goal of this meeting is to decide on the release date.”
  • “Let’s kick things off with a quick update.” (Commençons par un point rapide.)
  • “I have back-to-back meetings today.” (J’enchaîne les réunions aujourd’hui.)

Following the agenda (Suivre l’ordre du jour)

  • “First on the agenda is the new design.” (Premier point : le nouveau design.)
  • “Moving on to the next point.” (Passons au point suivant.)
  • “Let’s come back to that later.” (On y revient plus tard.)
  • “Let’s park that for now.” (Mettons ça de côté.)
  • “Can we take this offline?”
  • “We’re running out of time.” (On manque de temps.)

Interrupting and taking the floor (Interrompre poliment)

English Français
“Sorry to interrupt, but…” Désolé de vous interrompre, mais…
“Can I just add something?” Puis-je juste ajouter quelque chose ?
“If I may…” Si je peux me permettre…
“Could I jump in here?” Puis-je intervenir ?
“Let me just finish my point.” Laissez-moi finir mon idée.
“Sorry, you were saying?” Pardon, vous disiez ?

Video calls and technical problems (Appels vidéo)

English Français
“Can you hear me?” Vous m’entendez ?
“You’re on mute.” Vous êtes en sourdine.
“You’re breaking up.” Ça coupe (votre voix est hachée).
“The connection is bad.” La connexion est mauvaise.
“Can everyone see my screen?” Tout le monde voit mon écran ?
“Could you share your screen?” Pouvez-vous partager votre écran ?
“Sorry, I got disconnected.” Désolé, j’ai été déconnecté.
“Let me rejoin.” Je me reconnecte.

Presenting (Présenter)

A good presentation has three parts: say what you will say, say it, say what you said. Annonce, développe, résume.

  • “I’d like to walk you through the new architecture.” (Je voudrais vous présenter la nouvelle architecture.)
  • “I’ll start with the problem, then show the solution.”
  • “As you can see on this slide…” (Comme vous le voyez sur cette diapositive…)
  • “Next slide, please.” (Diapositive suivante, s’il vous plaît.)
  • “To sum up, …” (Pour résumer, …)
  • “Any questions?” (Des questions ?)
  • “Let me hand over to Sam.” (Je passe la parole à Sam.)

Closing (Clôturer)

  • “To wrap up, let me recap the action items.” (Pour conclure, je récapitule les actions.)
  • “Who’s taking this one?” (Qui prend celui-ci ?)
  • “I’ll send the notes after the meeting.” (J’envoie le compte rendu après.)
  • “Thanks, everyone. Have a good one!” (Merci à tous, bonne suite !)

Useful meeting words

Word Français
agenda ordre du jour
minutes / notes compte rendu
action item action à suivre
attendees participants
to chair / to facilitate présider / animer
follow-up suite à donner

À retenir

  • Avant : « Shall we get started? ». Pendant : « Let’s park that ». Après : « Let me recap the action items ».
  • Pour interrompre : « Sorry to interrupt, but…
